Visa and Mastercard Shape the Future of Bitcoin Payments

Visa and Mastercard Shape the Future of Bitcoin Payments

In a notable progression of the payments landscape, Visa and Mastercard have validated a prediction made over a decade ago regarding synergies between Bitcoin startups and established payment companies. As of 2026, these partnerships have transformed from theoretical ideas into a mainstream reality.

Historical Context of Predictions

The notions surrounding collaborations between traditional payment firms and Bitcoin ventures were initially voiced in a 2014 interview with Jason Oxman, the former CEO of the Electronic Transactions Association (ETA). Oxman articulated that payment businesses would adapt to the evolving preferences of consumers and merchants, emphasizing the industry’s commitment to facilitating electronic transactions, regardless of the underlying technology.

Expansion of Crypto Services

Fast forward to today, Visa and Mastercard have carved out a significant role within the crypto space. Visa, along with Stripe-owned Bridge, announced plans to roll out stablecoin-linked Visa cards across over 100 countries by the end of 2026, enabling users to utilize their stablecoin funds within Visa’s extensive merchant network. In April, Visa indicated that its stablecoin settlement pilot had achieved an impressive $7 billion annualized settlement rate.

Similarly, Mastercard’s Crypto Partner Program now includes over 100 crypto organizations and financial institutions. This initiative aims to forge closer ties between traditional fiat payments and on-chain commerce, with notable participation from companies like Alchemy Pay.

Stablecoins Take Center Stage

As the industry progresses, the focus has notably shifted from Bitcoin itself to stablecoins. Recently, Visa, Mastercard, and Coinbase joined a coalition of over 140 firms advocating for the development of the Open USD stablecoin. This project seeks to establish a robust payment infrastructure utilizing digital assets pegged to the US dollar.

BitPay’s Continued Growth

In parallel with these trends, BitPay has also seen notable expansion. The firm recently obtained MiCA authorization in the Netherlands, allowing it to offer regulated crypto services across certain EU markets. With these advancements, BitPay continues to solidify its position as a leader in crypto payment services.

The Evolution of Payments

More than ten years since Oxman forecasted greater cooperation between traditional payment networks and cryptocurrency companies, the industry landscape has evolved from isolated experiments into cohesive product offerings across cards, settlement solutions, and cross-border payments. In an era where both Visa and Mastercard are integral to the functioning of cryptocurrency payments, the earlier predictions have indeed come to fruition.
