SBI Group Pioneers Cross-Border Digital Asset Initiatives in Asia

On July 17, 2026, Japan’s SBI Group announced its acquisition of a majority stake in Coinhako, a cryptocurrency platform based in Singapore. This strategic move is part of SBI’s broader ambition to develop a global digital asset corridor across Asia.

Coinhako, which holds a Major Payment Institution license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), is set to play a crucial role in SBI’s regional expansion. CEO Yoshitaka Kitao of SBI Holdings, Japan’s largest online securities firm, stated that the goal is to connect digital asset exchanges worldwide.

Tokenization Partnership and Expansion Plans

In addition to the Coinhako acquisition, SBI has partnered with Ondo Finance to tokenize Japanese equities and other assets. Utilizing its stablecoin, JPYSC, SBI aims to integrate traditional financial markets with blockchain technology. The recent alliance with the Solana Foundation also marks a significant step, with the foundation acquiring an equity stake in SBI R3 Japan, which will be rebranded to SBI Solana Global. This new entity will focus on issuing stablecoins and tokenizing tangible assets like corporate bonds and real estate.

SBI’s Comprehensive Approach

According to Joseph Goh from Areta, a crypto investment advisory firm, SBI is the first financial group in Asia to pursue a complete digital asset value chain, including issuance, settlement, and trading across the region. Goh emphasized the strategic importance of the yen in on-chain settlement, indicating it as a key element of SBI’s future vision.

Despite these advancements, there are technical limitations to the use of JPYSC. Currently, it does not allow withdrawals to external wallets, restricting its functionality to accounts within SBI’s own platform.

Building Institutional Confidence

Sota Watanabe, CEO of Startale Group, noted that SBI’s investments reflect growing institutional confidence in blockchain infrastructure, highlighting Japan’s favorable regulatory environment for the crypto sector.

Recent Acquisitions and Future Goals

Earlier in June 2026, SBI announced plans to acquire the Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange Bitbank for approximately $289 million, expected to close in October pending regulatory approval. SBI has previously acquired Bitpoint in 2022 and has also ventured into substantial investments in exchanges and blockchain technology, focusing on long-term infrastructure development.

SBI’s strategy aims to integrate digital assets with traditional finance, anticipating that increased institutional participation will enhance market dynamics, thereby fostering retail engagement.

This expansion illustrates SBI Group’s commitment to shaping the future of digital finance across Asia as it seeks to establish itself as a leader in the digital asset landscape.
