T. Rowe Price Launches First Actively Managed Crypto ETF

T. Rowe Price, a prominent asset manager with nearly $2 trillion in assets under management, has made a significant move in the cryptocurrency space by launching the first actively managed multi-token spot crypto ETF, designated as TKNZ. This innovative exchange-traded fund officially began trading on NYSE Arca on July 16, 2026.

Portfolio Composition

The TKNZ ETF features a diverse portfolio of nine digital assets, with Bitcoin holding the largest share at nearly 41%. Following Bitcoin are Ethereum, which accounts for around 18%, and BNB, which represents approximately 11%. Other notable assets in the ETF include Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, Stellar’s XLM, as well as USD-pegged USDC.

Active Management Strategy

T. Rowe Price’s TKNZ ETF stands out from traditional passive crypto funds as it allows for active management of its holdings. The firm’s strategy involves utilizing research, valuation metrics, momentum signals, and risk management controls to adjust the portfolio based on changing market conditions. Unlike fixed-weight funds, TKNZ can pivot its allocations as new opportunities or risks become apparent.

Fund Management Team

The ETF is managed by Blue Macellari, who has led T. Rowe Price’s work within digital assets since 2022, alongside four co-portfolio managers: Stefan Hubrich, David Kroger, Sean McWilliams, and Dante Pearson. The team’s access to a broader pool of approved tokens, now numbering 17, further enhances the ETF’s flexibility. Eligible assets also include established cryptocurrencies like Cardano, Litecoin, and others.

Management Fees and Custody

TKNZ imposes a management fee of 0.75%, with a net fee waiver in effect until May 31, 2027. This waiver allows investors to benefit from reduced overhead costs while maintaining the management fee structure. The ETF employs Anchorage Digital Bank as its crypto custodian, ensuring secure asset management throughout its operation.

Market Timing Insight

Bloomberg senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas remarked on the strategic timing of T. Rowe Price’s launch, suggesting that the firm waited for the market to stabilize following a downturn in October 2025. He noted, “I think they were smart with the timing – waiting till the Oct selloff dust settled a bit.” This maneuver positions TKNZ effectively in a market that has seen fluctuations and evolving investor sentiment toward crypto assets.
