U.S. Sanctions Four Iran Central Bank Crypto Wallets; Tether Freezes $131 Million

U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Iranian Crypto Wallets

The U.S. Treasury has added four cryptocurrency wallets linked to Iran’s central bank to its sanctions list, a move that follows the breakdown of a ceasefire agreement and the escalation of military actions in the region.

Tether Freezes Significant Amount

In response to these sanctions, Tether has frozen $131 million in USDT tied to the newly sanctioned wallets. These wallets, which are based on the TRON blockchain, had previously received over $165 million in stablecoins, according to data from Chainalysis. Tether’s actions prevent those specific funds from being transferred or redeemed, although some amounts had already been moved prior to the freeze.

Details of the Sanctions

This decision marks an expansion of existing sanctions against Iran, which has been under U.S. counterterrorism measures since 2019 due to its support for organizations such as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force and Hezbollah. The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has clarified that the sanctioned wallet list is not exhaustive, suggesting the existence of other addresses that may also be subject to restrictions.

History of U.S. Actions Against Iran

This recent update follows prior sanctions imposed on Iranian exchanges like Nobitex, which were accused of facilitating the movement of stablecoins by the central bank. In April, Tether had already frozen about $344 million in USDT associated with these operations. The cumulative value of funds blocked now totals approximately $475 million.

Fund Visibility and Control

While the frozen tokens remain visible on the blockchain, they can no longer be used for transactions, as the wallets remain under the control of the Iranian central bank. Blockchain data indicates that these four wallets received funds from both an institutional liquidity provider and an Asia-based payment processor.

Conclusion

These developments underscore the ongoing complexities and challenges in the relationship between the U.S. and Iran, especially regarding cryptocurrency’s role in the global financial system.
