Tether Invests $20M in Argentine Fintech Ualá to Expand in Latin America
Tether Invests $20 Million in Argentine Fintech Ualá
Tether has reportedly made a significant investment of $20 million in Ualá, an Argentine digital bank, enhancing its footprint in the Latin American financial landscape. This investment is a part of Ualá’s $197 million equity funding round, which was announced in March and led by Allianz X.
Recent Investments by Tether in Latin America
In recent months, Tether has focused on expanding its presence in Latin America. This investment in Ualá is accompanied by other notable investments, including a $20 million infusion into the Brazilian cryptocurrency exchange Mercado Bitcoin earlier this month. This particular investment aims to bolster Mercado Bitcoin’s blockchain infrastructure and on-chain capital markets.
Additionally, Tether previously led a $14 million Series A funding round for another Argentine crypto platform, Belo, emphasizing its commitment to supporting regional fintech and crypto payment solutions.
Integration of Stablecoins in Latin America’s Financial Systems
Tether’s strategic investments mirror its larger goal of promoting stablecoin applications across various sectors in Latin America. The company continues to advocate for the use of its token, USDT, in practical payment scenarios. Recent reports have indicated that Bolivian officials are evaluating a proposal to integrate USDT within the country’s payment system, recognizing it alongside the boliviano and the U.S. dollar due to ongoing currency shortages.
Focus on Enterprise Payment Infrastructure
Beyond regional investments, Tether is actively investing in enterprise payment infrastructure. Recently, they led a $7 million funding round for Pact Labs to facilitate the integration of its USAT stablecoin into U.S. payroll systems. This partnership aims to revolutionize payroll processing, which handles over $11 trillion annually, by enabling payment through stablecoins.
In another significant development, Hyundai Motor America and Hyundai Motor Mexico successfully piloted a cross-border treasury payment using USDT on the Avalanche blockchain, showcasing the potential of stablecoins for swift and compliant transactions.
Tether’s Position in the Market
Tether’s investment activities come as USDT continues to hold its position as the largest stablecoin by market capitalization, which was approximately $184.4 billion at the time of reporting. As Tether promotes the adoption of stablecoins in various financial applications, its investments highlight a continued commitment to advancing digital finance in Latin America.
