Bitcoin Wallet Moves $383 Million After Eight Years Dormancy
A Bitcoin wallet that had been inactive since the cryptocurrency’s peak in late 2017 has recently transferred its entire balance, which is valued at about $383 million. The wallet, which holds 5,908 BTC, had not seen any transactions in almost eight years until it moved the funds on Thursday.
Background of the Wallet
The Bitcoin in question was accumulated when prices hovered around $16,000, shortly before a significant surge towards $20,000 that marked the end of 2017. When these coins were acquired, their total value was approximately $100 million. Today, their worth represents a remarkable gain of about 284%.
The price of Bitcoin has experienced considerable fluctuations since then, crashing to nearly $3,200 in 2018 and reaching highs of $69,000 in 2021. Most recently, it was priced around $64,800, still below the peaks of the previous cycle.
Transaction Details
Importantly, the bitcoins moved from an address using the original Bitcoin format to a new address format that is cheaper to use and was not widely supported when the coins were originally acquired. This has led to speculation that the funds were moved for reasons other than a direct sale.
According to analyses by CoinDesk, the BTC transferred to a new address rather than a known exchange location, indicating that the holder has not sold the coins yet. This contrasts sharply with other long-term holders, who have sold during price increases.
Potential Implications
The movement of such a substantial amount of Bitcoin from a dormant wallet raises questions about the future intentions of the holder. Typically, significant transfers like this could be part of estate settlement, custody upgrades, or arrangements for over-the-counter sales.
