Ben McKenzie Advocates Against CLARITY Act in Senate Lobbying Efforts

Actor and cryptocurrency critic Ben McKenzie has made his way to Capitol Hill to campaign against the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act as it nears a potential Senate vote. His efforts coincide with increasing Democratic calls for enhanced ethics regulations concerning cryptocurrency interests linked to former President Donald Trump.

Lobbying Against the CLARITY Act

McKenzie, known for his roles in The O.C., Southland, and Gotham, spent time on Tuesday meeting with lawmakers and joined several Democratic senators in a press conference to voice opposition to the act. He argues that the legislation fails to provide adequate consumer protections and lacks sufficient government ethics provisions.

The urgency of the situation lies in the bill’s requirement for sixty Senate votes to pass, making bipartisan support critical before the upcoming recess. During his lobbying efforts, McKenzie was accompanied by Senators Chris Murphy, Jeff Merkley, and Chris Van Hollen, among others from organizations like Americans for Financial Reform and Indivisible.

Concerns Over Ethical Implications

The primary focus of the opposition is the potential financial ties between senior government officials, particularly Trump, and the digital assets sector. Critics advocate for regulations that prevent senior officials and their families from profiting from industries they regulate. While the White House denies improper conflicts, the ethics issue remains a significant barrier to garnering necessary Democratic support for the bill’s passage.

McKenzie’s Viewpoint on Cryptocurrency

In recent years, McKenzie has emerged as a vocal critic of the cryptocurrency industry and its practices, particularly celebrity-endorsed token promotions. He emphasizes that technology cannot completely eliminate human oversight from financial systems. His recent push to lobby against the CLARITY Act highlights his determination to influence the legislative discourse. In a social media post, McKenzie stated:

“If you vote against Clarity, you will be on the right side of history. If you vote for Clarity, you can be damn sure we will not forget the truth. Voting against Clarity offers every senator an opportunity to go on the record and do the right thing.”

Future Prospects for the CLARITY Act

The CLARITY Act aims to establish a federal market structure for digital assets, outlining regulatory roles for the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission. It intends to provide clearer oversight for exchanges, token issuers, and other crypto enterprises. Having already passed the Senate Banking Committee in May, the bill is on the Senate legislative calendar but still requires sufficient support to overcome the procedural threshold.

As negotiations continue over ethics provisions and regulatory rules concerning decentralized finance and stablecoins, McKenzie’s lobbying efforts add significant public sentiment to the debate. The forthcoming House hearing on July 17 will further explore the implications of the bill, although it will not facilitate direct movement of Senate legislation. Ultimately, the bill’s success hinges on whether lawmakers can resolve ongoing disputes and secure the necessary bipartisan backing for a vote.
