Bitcoin Approaches $65K Following Lower-than-Expected CPI Data

Bitcoin has made a notable recovery, inching towards the $65,000 mark after U.S. inflation data for June came in below expectations. This unexpected cooling of the consumer price index (CPI) has significantly lowered the odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike during its upcoming July policy meeting.

Impact of CPI Data on Market Sentiment

As per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the year-over-year CPI slowed to 3.5% in June, falling short of the anticipated 3.8%. Additionally, the monthly CPI registered a 0.4% decrease, surpassing forecasts of a 0.1% decline. These figures spurred a fresh uptick in risk assets, including Bitcoin, which rose close to 5% to an intraday high of $64,830 before settling around $64,560.

Geopolitical Tensions and Rate Hike Expectations

The surge in Bitcoin follows a period of volatility that saw its price dip below $62,000, largely due to escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Furthermore, core inflation data demonstrated a similar trend, with core CPI at 2.6% year-over-year against an expected 2.8%.

The recent inflation report has shifted market expectations markedly. Data from the CME FedWatch tool indicates only a 16.6% chance of a Federal Reserve rate increase at the July meeting. Other platforms like Polymarket reflected a drop from a 34% to a 9% probability for a July hike.

Market Outlook Amid Ongoing Risks

Despite improved inflation indicators, macroeconomic risks, particularly in the Middle East, continue to loom over the market. Recent geopolitical developments, especially the renewed conflict involving the U.S. and Iran, along with President Trump’s proposal to impose shipping fees on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, are adding layers of uncertainty. These factors could tighten global oil supplies, complicating inflation forecasts.

While the cooling inflation has momentarily boosted the outlook for cryptocurrencies, market participants are closely watching the upcoming testimony of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh and the forthcoming producer price index (PPI) report. These events could have significant implications for the future of Bitcoin as investors navigate through ongoing geopolitical tensions and economic indicators.
