Wikipedia’s Limited Coverage of Crypto Raises Concerns for AI Understanding

Wikipedia’s Limited Coverage of Cryptocurrency

A recent report from the crypto communications firm Chainstory indicates that the cryptocurrency industry may be at a disadvantage due to a lack of entries on Wikipedia. Out of the 1,000 largest crypto projects listed by market capitalization on CoinGecko, only 67 have Wikipedia pages.

Significant Gaps in Coverage

The report highlights notable omissions, including major projects such as Hyperliquid, a trading platform, and Sui, a layer-1 network that originated from Meta’s discontinued Diem project. The authors argue that Wikipedia’s stringent editorial policies, initially implemented to combat the influx of lesser-known and transient projects during earlier cryptocurrency cycles, now hinder the representation of well-established and valuable resources in the crypto sector.

The Impact on AI Tools

With more users relying on AI tools like ChatGPT for information, the lack of comprehensive coverage on Wikipedia becomes increasingly concerning. According to data from Profound, Wikipedia accounts for 7.8% of source links on ChatGPT, significantly higher than 1.8% for Reddit and 1.1% for Forbes.

Challenges to Creating Wikipedia Entries

Creating a Wikipedia page is not as straightforward as many believe. Prospective articles must pass through rigorous levels of moderation, where volunteer reviewers evaluate them based on criteria like notability and reliable sources. Even if an article is approved, it may still be removed by administrators or subject to community votes.

Perception of Crypto Coverage

Wikipedia’s approach to crypto news organizations has resulted in a perception that they are often biased towards positive portrayals of cryptocurrencies, rendering them generally unreliable. In contrast, mainstream media outlets like Reuters and Bloomberg are considered reliable sources, albeit they may overlook niche areas of the cryptocurrency market.

Conclusion

The Chainstory report concludes that the representation of cryptocurrency on Wikipedia is alarmingly sparse, framing the platform as a “gate that is genuinely hard to pass.” As Wikipedia remains a crucial source of information for many, the implications of its limited coverage on public understanding, especially among AI tools, could be substantial.
