June Consumer Price Index Declines, Impacting Fed Rate Hike Expectations
June Consumer Price Index Declines
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for June fell by 0.4%, significantly surpassing economists’ expectations of a 0.1% decline. This sudden drop in inflation figures could influence the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions in their upcoming meeting.
Soften Expectations for Rate Hikes
The CPI decrease indicates that U.S. inflation is softer than projected. Year-over-year, CPI registered a 3.5% increase, falling short of prior forecasts of 3.8% and the 4.2% surge seen in May. Furthermore, core CPI, which omits volatile food and energy prices, was flat in June against predictions of a 0.2% rise.
Potential Impact on Bitcoin
As inflation eased, Bitcoin’s price rose, reaching $63,400 – an increase of about 2% in the last 24 hours. The CPI data carries significant weight, especially after an indication from Fed Governor Chris Waller in support of immediate rate hikes if core CPI numbers had not shown decline.
Federal Reserve’s Upcoming Decisions
Just a day before the reports were released, the odds of a July rate hike had climbed to as high as 42%, a significant jump from 8% a month prior, as indicated by CME FedWatch data. Investors are looking forward to insights from Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh, who will be addressing Congress shortly regarding the economy’s state.
