Cumberland Achieves Major Payment Institution Licence in Singapore

Cumberland has successfully obtained a Major Payment Institution (MPI) licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), enabling its local branch, Cumberland SG Pte. Ltd., to provide regulated digital payment token and cross-border money transfer services.

Completion of the Licensing Process

The approval represents the conclusion of a licensing process that began in March when MAS granted Cumberland SG an in-principle approval. At that time, MAS confirmed that Cumberland had met the initial regulatory requirements, although additional conditions were necessary before the full licence was issued.

Regulatory Standards in Singapore

In its announcement on social media, Cumberland expressed its satisfaction with the approval, highlighting Singapore’s commitment to maintaining high standards for digital asset regulation. The company intends to further its operations in Singapore, which it recognizes as a leading global financial center.

Context of Regulatory Scrutiny

This licencing approval comes against a backdrop of stringent regulatory oversight in Singapore, where the MAS has been proactive in its enforcement actions against companies failing to meet compliance standards. Earlier this year, for instance, the MAS revoked the MPI licence of Bsquared Technology due to several regulatory breaches. The MAS is also scrutinizing firms without local authorization, as evidenced by its recent inclusion of Bybit Fintech Limited on its Investor Alert List.

Institutional Expansion Plans

Cumberland plans to leverage this new MPI licence to expand its compliant digital asset services for institutional clients. The firm’s regulatory advancements in Singapore align with recent developments in the United States, where the SEC dismissed its enforcement case against Cumberland, concluding allegations that the company had operated as an unregistered securities dealer.

Future Prospects

As Cumberland joins a group of other licensed firms such as BitGo, Coinbase, and Gemini, it solidifies Singapore’s reputation as a well-regulated hub for institutional digital asset services.
