Citi Set to Launch Bitcoin Custody Service for Institutions by Year-End 2026
Citi’s Ambitious Move into Bitcoin Custody
Citi has announced the impending launch of its institutional digital asset custody services, starting with Bitcoin (BTC), as part of its newly introduced Custody+ platform. The bank expects to roll out this service by the end of 2026, enabling institutional clients to manage both traditional securities and cryptocurrencies under a unified framework.
Innovative Custody Framework
With Custody+, more than 80% of Citi’s asset-servicing events are now processed in real time. The bank invests over $2 billion annually in enhancing its services platform, focusing on speed and scalability for institutional investors.
Integration of Digital Assets
The new custody service allows asset managers to consolidate custody services for Bitcoin and traditional assets, streamlining their operational models. Citi has made it clear that the custody technology will be tightly integrated into its existing digital asset infrastructure, although specific clients and launch dates remain undisclosed.
Real-Time Processing Technology
Citi has already implemented its patented Single Event Processing (SEP) technology, allowing for continuous asset servicing across domestic and international custody networks. The bank reported that this has significantly reduced processing times for corporate actions.
Additional Services and Future Plans
Alongside Bitcoin custody, Citi’s token services are set to facilitate near-instant transfers of tokenized deposits using blockchain technology, enhancing transaction efficiency. Furthermore, Citi is exploring additional products that will link traditional financial claims to blockchain systems.
Looking Ahead
While the focus is initially on Bitcoin, Citi’s broader intentions also include potentially offering other digital assets in the future. The bank is actively engaging with the market to assess demand and regulatory conditions, particularly in the U.S. market.
As the institutional demand for cryptocurrency custody continues to grow, Citi’s proactive approach positions it as a significant player in the evolving landscape of digital finance.
