Ethereum Approaches $2,000 Resistance as Price Rises

Ethereum’s price increased by nearly 2% on August 17, 2026, reclaiming the $1,900 mark, while improving momentum and liquidation clusters brought the $2,000 resistance back into focus. At press time, the price of Ethereum (ETH) stood at $1,912, marking a rise of 1.95% from the previous trading session.

Market Dynamics

After bouncing back from a low of $1,872, buyers successfully defended the $1,870 area, pushing the price above several key moving averages. Specifically, the 20-day, 50-day, and 100-day moving averages closed at $1,889, $1,845, and $1,869, respectively. This upward movement comes as part of a broader recovery from a late June low that saw Ethereum priced around $1,530.

Structural Analysis and Price Potential

Despite the recent gains, Ethereum is still trading below its declining 200-day moving average, which sits at approximately $2,009. Hence, the $2,000 to $2,010 range is critical for a potential breakout. Analyst Tom Lee highlighted that ETH is about 3.5% below its daily Ichimoku Cloud, indicating that a movement above this layer could signal a significant breakout, as Ethereum has not decisively been above this since October 9, 2025.

Liquidation Clusters and Resistance Levels

The current liquidation heatmap indicates concentrated long leverage above the $1,925 zone, with strong resistance appearing between $1,945 and $1,950. Analysts suggest that surpassing these levels could force bearish positions to close, which would elevate demand. However, analysts have cautioned that significant liquidation pools exist below the $1,860 mark, where forced long liquidations could occur if Ethereum fails to maintain its positions above $1,870.

Analyst Perspectives

Michaël van de Poppe stated that the construction of higher highs and higher lows in Ethereum’s daily chart suggests an upward break is more probable than an immediate drop. Nevertheless, he warned that falling below $1,870 could lead to a rapid decline toward $1,700.

Conclusion

The immediate market favors buyers as long as Ethereum remains above critical daily moving averages. Support levels are established at $1,889 and $1,870, while bulls need to first clear resistance near $1,925 and $1,950 before testing the $2,000 psychological barrier. A close above $2,010 would be pivotal for Ethereum’s longer-term market structure, paving the way for further bullish potential.
