Solo Bitcoin Miner Scores $200,000 Jackpot with $150 Device

Solo Bitcoin Miner Scores $200,000 Jackpot with $150 Device

A solo Bitcoin miner recently achieved extraordinary success by mining Bitcoin block 957,382 with a modestly priced device known as the Bitaxe, which costs between $60 and $150. This miner garnered a total of 3.1382 BTC, equivalent to approximately $200,000, despite facing odds estimated at 1 in 18,000.

The Power of Bitaxe

The miner utilized a low-power, credit-card-sized ASIC miner called the Bitaxe, running for merely eight hours through the Public Pool service. The Bitaxe device, notably powered by the BM1370 chip that also drives large industrial miners like the Antminer S21, delivered an average hash rate of just 995 GH/s, about 1 terahash per second.

Growth of Solo Mining

This successful mining event showcases a broader trend; in the past 12 months, solo miners have found 24 blocks, marking a 41% increase compared to the previous year. In fact, this milestone represents the second successful solo mining attempt using a Bitaxe on the Public Pool.

Interestingly, the triumph of solo miners is not just a coincidence. In 2026 alone, solo miners have identified a total of 12 blocks. Noteworthy examples include a June 29 discovery on Solo CKPool that netted a miner 3.16 BTC and a successful mine from a cluster of 14 Canaan Nano devices on May 31, which collectively achieved a hash rate of 157 TH/s.

Challenges for the Mining Industry

While solo miners celebrate their recent fortunes, the broader Bitcoin mining industry faces significant challenges. Mining difficulty has decreased by 5% to 127.17 trillion as of July 12, after having dropped more than 10% in mid-June before a partial recovery. Many major mining companies are pivoting to adapt to the changing landscape, with some exploring opportunities in artificial intelligence data centers and related infrastructure to sustain operations.

As solo mining continues to gain traction, this recent $200,000 win serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the cryptocurrency landscape, likening it to a lottery win with a scratch-off ticket from a gas station.
