Goldman Sachs Signals Low Probability for September Fed Rate Hike
Goldman Sachs has reported that a Federal Reserve interest-rate increase in September is “very unlikely,” providing a potential boost for Bitcoin investors. The financial institution’s assessment follows a series of soft economic data which has contributed to the cautious outlook.
Economic Data Influences Outlook
According to Chief Economist Jan Hatzius, the chance of a rate increase has diminished significantly due to recent figures related to retail sales and employment, as well as signs of slowing inflation. In a note to clients, Hatzius remarked, “Under our baseline economic forecasts, the inflation news is more likely to improve further than to deteriorate anew as the year progresses.” He added that he believes the market’s expectations for the Federal funds rate are overly aggressive.
Impact on Bitcoin Pricing
Currently, Bitcoin is trading around $63,500, reflecting a modest gain of 1% since the start of the day. The cryptocurrency has remained within a stable range of $62,000 to $66,000 for over a month. The expectation of steady interest rates is generally seen as favorable for risk assets, including Bitcoin, since lower rates can enhance liquidity and stimulate demand.
Traders’ Expectations
At present, traders are estimating a 30.6% chance that the Federal Reserve will raise rates by 25 basis points, which would place the benchmark interest rate in the 3.75%–4% range. The majority are anticipating that the current monetary policy will remain unchanged. This shift in expectations follows last week’s report indicating a deceleration in inflation, aligning with predictions.
