Knaken Creditors Confront Potential Losses After €2.2 Million Crypto Sale

Knaken Creditors Confront Potential Losses After €2.2 Million Crypto Sale

The creditors of the bankrupt Dutch cryptocurrency platform, Knaken, face significant financial uncertainty following the recent sale of remaining seized assets for €2.2 million. This sale represents the first pool of funds available for creditor claims from Knaken’s bankruptcy estate.

Update on Knaken’s Bankruptcy Situation

On July 16, 2026, a Rotterdam court declared Knaken bankrupt after allegations surfaced regarding €7 million in unaccounted funds. A court-appointed trustee, Carl Hamm, has reached out to approximately 6,300 former customers, indicating that recoveries could be limited.

According to Hamm, customers had invested an estimated €10 million to €12 million through various means, including cryptocurrency positions and loans. The €2.2 million generated from the recent asset sale will only cover a fraction of that amount before expenses and varying creditor classes are considered.

Prosecutors and Trustee Investigate Financial Irregularities

The sale of the cryptocurrency followed a criminal investigation into potential misconduct related to Knaken’s financial operations. Hamm is currently analyzing the platform’s assets, liabilities, and management practices. He cautioned that thousands of customers should not expect to recover their full balances.

Knaken’s owner has disputed the trustee’s claims about customer accounts, stating that the trustee’s calculations regarding investments and the shortfall lack merit. While the owner admitted that some customer positions were uncovered, he challenged the estimate of total customer investments.

Legal Framework for the Proceeds from the Sale

The decision to sell the seized crypto assets aligns with Article 117 of the Dutch Code of Criminal Procedure, which allows for the sale of seized property to preserve value during legal proceedings. The proceeds from this transaction will be held in euros while ownership and creditor rights are determined.

Future Considerations for Creditors

Customers can file claims with Hamm, providing account statements and evidence. The process will involve verifying these claims, establishing their legal standings, and exploring additional assets for possible recovery. As the criminal investigation continues, no charges have been filed yet, and any finalized agreement with creditors remains pending.

The €2.2 million from the crypto sale marks the beginning of potential recovery efforts rather than a definitive resolution. Creditors are advised to remain realistic about the prospects of recovering their investments as Hamm continues his audit and investigation.
