Ethereum Advocate Warns Wall Street’s Private Blockchain Trend is a ‘Race to the Bottom’
Concerns About Private Blockchain Adoption
In a recent interview, Vivek Raman, co-founder and CEO of Etherealize, criticized Wall Street’s renewed interest in private and permissioned blockchain networks, labeling it a “race to the bottom.” Raman’s perspective highlights how these privately controlled systems deviate from the fundamental principles of interoperability that blockchain technology was meant to promote.
The Limitations of Consortium Chains
Raman pointed out that the resurgence of “consortium chains” creates isolated environments that fail to communicate with one another. This fragmentation undermines the liquidity and interconnectedness that public networks like Ethereum and Solana are designed to facilitate. The Etherealize CEO emphasized that private networks may offer certain privacy and reduced risk benefits appealing to traditional finance (TradFi) firms, yet these attributes come at the cost of losing the foundational strengths of blockchain technology.
The Need for an Open Infrastructure
Raman likened Ethereum’s public mainnet to the fundamental protocol of the internet, HTTP, and argued that a secure and open base layer is crucial for maximizing liquidity and interoperability. He stated, “We strongly believe that you need a global, open, permissionless infrastructure as the base layer. Then you can build all the permissioning on top of it.” This perspective underscores the necessity of having a transparent and accessible foundation in blockchain ecosystems.
Market Sentiments on Decentralization
Despite the technical merits of decentralization, skepticism remains in the market regarding the importance of these values. Christian Catalini, founder of the MIT Cryptoeconomics Lab, commented on this tension, stating the current focus is heavily on enterprise sales rather than genuine decentralization. “If we land on these networks that are more curated and have a clear sponsor… then some of the pro-competitive benefits of blockchains will never materialize,” he cautioned.
Etherealize’s Role in the Ecosystem
Etherealize, backed by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and the Ethereum Foundation, aims to bridge TradFi with the open dynamics of Ethereum. Recent developments, such as BlackRock’s entry into Ethereum-based funds, are considered a positive shift by Raman, pointing toward the increased institutional interest in transparent blockchain infrastructures.
Raman concluded, emphasizing that as clarity around regulations increases, institutional investments are likely to flow towards open networks. He remarked, “If you go to consortium chains, you’re kind of paying the consortium… the incentives go away very quickly” for those not on the inside of these networks.
