Grayscale Withdraws Three Altcoin ETFs Just Before Cardano Eligibility

Grayscale Withdraws Three Altcoin ETFs Just Before Cardano Eligibility

On August 7, 2026, Grayscale Investments made the unexpected decision to withdraw its registrations for three altcoin ETFs: the Cardano Trust ETF, the Polkadot Trust ETF, and the Hedera Trust ETF. This move came just two days prior to Cardano (ADA) achieving its eligibility for a spot ETF following the completion of the six-month seasoning period for its CME futures contract.

Withdrawal Details and Market Reaction

The withdrawals were filed in rapid succession, taking under four minutes, with no shares having been issued or sold under any of the three funds. Following the news, ADA experienced a drop of more than 2 percent, while Polkadot (DOT) and Hedera (HBAR) also saw declines of nearly 2 percent. This was a point of disappointment for communities surrounding these altcoins, who had anticipated ETF approval as a market catalyst.

Significance of the Timing

The timing of Grayscale’s withdrawal is noteworthy. Cardano had only two days left until August 9, when it would officially become eligible for an ETF listing under the SEC’s streamlined standards. These standards allow asset classes that have traded on regulated futures markets for six months to bypass lengthy approval processes, presenting a significant opportunity for altcoin ETFs.

Reasons Behind Grayscale’s Decision

The primary reason for Grayscale’s withdrawal appears to be economic considerations. The costs associated with launching an ETF, including legal fees, compliance, and marketing, can be substantial. For widely demanded assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum, these costs are outweighed by potential revenue. In contrast, the current market for altcoin ETFs, particularly for a cryptocurrency like Cardano, does not present a similarly lucrative outlook.

Grayscale’s Financial Landscape

Grayscale has been facing financial challenges, with reports highlighting a 20 percent decline in its revenue. The firm has seen significant outflows from its flagship products since they were converted to ETFs. Given the downturn, the decision to withdraw from altcoin ETF offerings may reflect a shift in priorities as Grayscale navigates a challenging market environment.

Outlook for Altcoin ETFs

Despite Grayscale’s retreat, the potential for a Cardano ETF remains alive through other issuers, including Bitwise and Canary Capital, who still have active filings. However, the experience of altcoin ETFs thus far suggests that regulatory approval alone does not guarantee market interest or investment. For Cardano to attract institutional investment through an ETF, it will need to demonstrate sustained demand that goes beyond the current retail investor base.
