Bitcoin’s $1 Million Forecast Faces Challenges Amid High Treasury Yields

Bitcoin’s Ambitious $1 Million Price Forecast Under Scrutiny

Forecasts predicting Bitcoin could reach a price of $1 million are facing skepticism as high yields on long-term U.S. Treasuries diminish the appeal of non-yielding assets like Bitcoin. Recently, asset manager Bitwise revived this prediction, suggesting Bitcoin could even reach $1.3 million within the next decade, a projection echoed by notable figures like Coinbase’s Brian Armstrong and Block’s Jack Dorsey.

Economic Factors Influencing Bitcoin’s Attractiveness

The prevailing assumption driving these optimistic forecasts is the belief that Bitcoin could capture a portion of gold’s market capitalization or attract funds from other significant financial sectors like global pension funds. However, analysts caution that such projections often overlook the opportunity costs associated with holding Bitcoin.

Currently, the 30-year U.S. Treasury yield has surpassed 5%, its highest level since 2007. This means that investors choosing to invest in Bitcoin are foregoing returns from Treasuries, which are viewed as the closest proxy for a risk-free investment. Analysts have indicated that these attractive Treasury yields may restrain the pace at which capital flows into Bitcoin.

Bitcoin’s Recent Price Performance Compared to Treasury Yields

In the recent 2025 bull cycle, Bitcoin’s price peaked at $126,000, significantly higher than its previous cycle high of nearly $70,000. However, when adjusted for the long-term cost of capital indicated by the 30-year yield, Bitcoin’s performance fell short of previous cycles, marking a deviation from its historical trend of surpassing previous highs.

Bearish Technical Indicators

Technical analysis shows that the Bitcoin-to-30-year Treasury yield ratio has formed a “head-and-shoulders” pattern, a bearish signal that implies further declines could be on the horizon. This pattern suggests a typical downturn follows its confirmation, and historical studies indicate it has a low failure rate, with an average decline of 16% once confirmed.

Looking Ahead

Although this analysis does not rule out a future increase in Bitcoin’s dollar price, achieving seven-figure targets may necessitate a turnaround in the current interest rate environment, similar to conditions seen in 2020-21. Presently, the trend appears to be moving in the opposite direction, raising questions about the feasibility of such ambitious price targets.
