Kalshi Explores $750 Million Funding Round with Sequoia and Wellington
Kalshi Pursues Significant Funding Amidst Growing Valuation
Kalshi, a leading prediction-market platform, is in advanced discussions with Sequoia Capital and Wellington Management to secure a funding round of at least $750 million. This investment is projected to place the company’s valuation at an impressive $40 billion.
Previous Funding Success
This new funding endeavor follows Kalshi’s successful raise of $1 billion this past May, which valued the company at $22 billion. According to reports, both Sequoia and Wellington are considering leading the upcoming investment round, and the total funding could potentially exceed the initially discussed $750 million.
Investor Profiles and Goals
Sequoia Capital, a major player in Silicon Valley with $56 billion in assets under management, is already involved with Kalshi. An executive from Sequoia serves on Kalshi’s board of directors. Wellington Management, based in Boston and holding $1.3 trillion in client assets, is looking to make its first investment in Kalshi with this funding round. Historically, Wellington has engaged in private investments leading up to various companies’ initial public offerings.
Future Plans and Market Position
Kalshi’s Chief Executive Officer, Tarek Mansour, has hinted at plans for an initial public offering (IPO) in 2027. With its annualized revenue climbing to $4 billion as of July, largely fueled by betting activities surrounding the 2026 World Cup, Kalshi has established itself as the top revenue-generating prediction market platform, surpassing competitors like Polymarket.
Current Market Dynamics
In contrast, Polymarket’s revenue reached only $1.1 billion during the same period. Kalshi reportedly maintains a dominant position in the U.S. prediction market, claiming approximately 95% market share according to Sequoia. Over 80% of Kalshi’s trading volume is attributed to sports contracts.
Leadership Changes
In a noteworthy leadership announcement, Kalshi revealed the return of Jeff Bandman, who was instrumental in helping the platform secure its CFTC-regulated exchange license in 2020. Bandman will now serve as CEO of Kalshi Prime, which focuses on serving clients involved in Kalshi’s margin perpetual futures business.
Neither Sequoia, Wellington, nor Kalshi have responded to requests for confirmation regarding the funding discussions at this time.
