Metaplanet Unveils BitBonds with ¥200 Million Private Sale

On August 13, 2026, Metaplanet announced the launch of its new bond issuance program, known as BitBonds, successfully completing a private placement that raised approximately 200 million yen, equivalent to about $1.3 million.

Details of the BitBonds Issuance

The BitBonds are unsecured senior bonds, set to mature in roughly three years, offering an annual interest rate ranging from 4% to 4.3%. The bonds were distributed by Metaplanet Securities to eligible investors under Japan’s private placement regulations.

With future issuances tied closely to market conditions, investor demand, and funding needs, Metaplanet indicated that additional series of BitBonds will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

BitBonds’ Place in Metaplanet’s Funding Strategy

Metaplanet aims to use the BitBonds as a consistent funding channel alongside common shares and equity-linked instruments, permitting the issuance of senior debt as required instead of relying on large, one-time bond transactions.

While the inaugural issuance is designed to operate privately, there are intentions to prepare for public bond offerings should the need arise, although no such offerings have currently been approved.

Impact of Bitcoin on Financial Stability

Despite the focus on BitBonds, Metaplanet continues to hold 43,000 Bitcoin. CEO Simon Gerovich confirmed this after a transfer of 5,014 BTC between custodian addresses, clarifying that no assets were sold during these activities. The company’s financial health, however, remains influenced by Bitcoin’s price, as it is central to Metaplanet’s asset structure.

The unsecured nature of the BitBonds means investors must rely on Metaplanet’s overall financial capability to meet principal and interest obligations, with the company’s recent disclosures acknowledging the impact that volatile Bitcoin prices can have on their fiscal responsibilities.

Future of BitBonds

Moving forward, Metaplanet has suggested that future BitBond series may see variations in size, terms, and interest rates, with modifications or postponement possible depending on market dynamics and strategic decisions. Metaplanet Securities is positioned to facilitate future solicitations and administer the bonds while maintaining investor eligibility standards.

Upon the announcement of BitBonds, Metaplanet’s shares closed at 223 yen, reflecting a modest increase of 0.9% – although this movement occurred post-market closure, leaving the full impact of the news on investors yet to be realized.
