Public Miners Contribute $1.78 Billion in Bitcoin Selling Pressure

Public Miners’ Impact on Bitcoin Prices

Public miners have emerged as a significant yet often overlooked source of selling pressure in the Bitcoin market, contributing an estimated $1.78 billion to the current market dynamics. Throughout 2026, these miners have sold approximately 28,000 BTC, a factor contributing to the cryptocurrency’s recent price decline.

Current Market Trends

As of now, Bitcoin is trading at around $63,785.21, marking a 27% decrease from the beginning of the year. This downturn is not only attributed to outflows from exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which have seen net losses of over $4.4 billion, but also to sales from public mining operations.

The Role of Public Miners

Public companies involved in Bitcoin mining validate transactions on the blockchain and receive newly minted BTC as compensation. However, a report from Blockware Intelligence indicates that these firms have seen their Bitcoin holdings decrease from 127,000 BTC at the start of the year to about 99,000 BTC. The cumulative sales have provided considerable selling pressure on the market, an aspect that has previously been downplayed.

Market Dynamics and Economic Pressures

While the amount sold by public miners is less than the total ETF outflows, market price is driven at the margin by the most recent transactions. In a market characterized by declining interest, even minor continuous selling can significantly influence prices. Analysts have pointed out that early-year sales from public miners are an under-discussed factor in Bitcoin’s poor performance.

Challenges Facing Public Miners

These mining companies are increasingly confronting financial pressures, with the average cost to mine a single Bitcoin estimated at $74,300. As a response, some miners are transitioning into artificial intelligence (AI) ventures, leveraging their substantial energy resources to adapt to changing market conditions. This shift coincides with a recent 18% decrease in Bitcoin mining difficulty, easing competition and technically increasing rewards for remaining miners.

Ultimately, while public miners’ sales have exacerbated Bitcoin’s price challenges, their operational adjustments may offer a more sustainable pathway forward as the cryptocurrency landscape evolves.
