Shipfinex Partners with ADI Chain to Tokenize $500 Million Vessel Portfolio
Shipfinex and ADI Chain’s Strategic Partnership
Dubai-based Shipfinex has announced a partnership with ADI Chain to tokenize a portfolio comprising approximately 35 vessels, collectively valued at about $500 million. This innovative approach aims to provide shipowners enhanced access to funding through blockchain technology and investment channels.
Structure of the Tokenization
The tokenization will be facilitated through separate special purpose vehicles (SPVs), allowing for the creation of tokens that represent various economic interests linked to each vessel. These interests may include vessel-backed credit or income from charter agreements. The partnership will also ensure that the economic rights of each vessel are legally separated, thereby permitting independent structuring.
Role of ADI Chain
Under the agreement, ADI Chain will offer the necessary blockchain infrastructure for the distribution and settlement of the tokens. Primary allocations and distributions are anticipated to be supported by stablecoins, which may be denominated in UAE dirhams, U.S. dollars, and potentially other currencies. As of now, the project is still in the pilot and operational readiness phase, and no Maritime Asset Tokens have been publicly issued.
The Growing Market of Tokenized Assets
The market for tokenized real-world assets has shown significant growth, totaling approximately $38.1 billion as of August 9. Although tokenized assets are growing rapidly, Shipfinex’s planned vessel portfolio represents a small slice of the estimated $2.1 trillion global maritime industry, as reported by Clarksons Research.
Future Prospects
Experts predict that the tokenized asset market could reach $4 trillion by the end of 2028, with increasing institutional interest. Shipfinex’s initiative could pave the way for traditional maritime asset financing, transitioning from conventional bank loans and private investments into a more tokenized model, thus increasing accessibility to this asset class.
Conclusion
While no Maritime Asset Tokens have yet been issued under the partnership, Shipfinex and ADI Chain are actively working on operational readiness and regulatory frameworks necessary for bringing their tokenization project to fruition. This development could significantly influence how maritime assets are utilized for investment in the future.
