Mysten Labs Unveils Tessera: A Confidential Settlement Prototype on Sui
Mysten Labs has launched Tessera, a new business-to-business settlement prototype designed to maintain confidentiality of payment amounts while allowing controlled access for counterparties, regulators, and auditors. This innovation was announced on August 10, 2026, via a social media thread by the Sui network.
Tessera: Redefining B2B Payments
Tessera enables KYC-approved businesses to settle invoices using a confidential stablecoin. While the transaction amounts remain encrypted, counterparties can view their transactions. This approach aims to address the concerns of institutions regarding competitive visibility, as the public nature of blockchain can reveal crucial commercial data.
Security Features and Controlled Access
The prototype hinges on Seal MPC, Mysten’s technology for encrypted data management and controlled on-chain access. Seal employs threshold encryption to enforce policies dictating who can view payment amounts, ensuring that only authorized parties, such as regulators or tax authorities, can access sensitive information.
As part of the system, a regulator might see overview data for the entire network, while a tax authority could be restricted to only view information pertaining to a specific participant. Temporary access can also be granted to arbiters during dispute resolutions.
Confidential Transfers and Future Potential
Tessera builds upon Mysten’s earlier confidential transfer capabilities introduced in June, which also utilized advanced cryptographic techniques like Twisted ElGamal encryption and zero-knowledge proofs to validate payments without disclosing their amounts. This enhancement is expected to support a wide array of payment scenarios, from one-time transfers to recurring invoices.
Institutional Privacy Challenges Addressed
This new development comes amidst growing recognition that public visibility can deter companies from utilizing blockchain solutions for settlement. Competing blockchains, including those from XRP Ledger and Circle, are also exploring similar models to ensure transaction confidentiality while maintaining necessary oversight for compliance.
Current Status and Market Reaction
Despite the announcement, the SUI token saw little definitive movement, trading around $0.69, with a range between approximately $0.684 and $0.704 in the following 24 hours. Mysten Labs has clarified that Tessera is still in a prototype phase, with no specific details regarding participants or a public launch timeline provided.
The future path for Tessera will depend on its ability to evolve beyond a demonstration and cater specifically to the needs of regulated businesses that require different levels of privacy and dispute resolution.
