BlackRock Canada Launches New ETF Allocating 3% to Bitcoin

BlackRock Canada Introduces Innovative ETF

BlackRock Canada has officially launched an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that uniquely combines global equities with a 3% allocation to Bitcoin. The product is designed to offer Canadian investors a streamlined way to gain exposure to both asset classes within a single investment option, listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker IBQT.

Details of the New ETF

Commencing trading on August 10, 2026, the iShares Equity + Bitcoin ETF Portfolio, IBQT, strategically allocates 97% to equities and 3% to Bitcoin. This allocation is facilitated through investments primarily in other iShares ETFs. The Bitcoin exposure is specifically derived from BlackRock’s Canadian Bitcoin ETF, known as IBIT, which started trading on Cboe Canada in January 2025.

IBQT is structured to enable investors to obtain diversified exposure to stocks and Bitcoin through one listed security, with an annual management fee of 0.22%.

Expansion of BlackRock’s Offerings

Alongside IBQT, BlackRock Canada has launched another ETF, the iShares Core MSCI All-International Equity Index ETF (XINT), which features an annual management fee of 0.23%. This fund aims to track global companies outside North America, encompassing over 5,000 firms across various markets.

Market Outlook and Implications

The launch of IBQT marks a significant step in BlackRock’s strategy to diversify investment opportunities in Canada, providing a pathway for investors to blend traditional equity investments with Bitcoin exposure. BlackRock is known for its substantial management footprint, overseeing approximately $6.2 trillion across more than 1,700 ETFs globally as of June 30.

With IBQT, the firm is expanding beyond isolated Bitcoin ETFs and pivoting towards more integrated investment solutions. Although Bitcoin is allotted only 3% of the portfolio, this move reflects a growing trend of incorporating cryptocurrency within broader investment strategies.

This dual offering approach may cater to existing investor interests in cryptocurrencies while maintaining a focus on more traditional equity investments, suggesting that the demand for such pre-set allocations could shape future investment behaviors in the Canadian market.
