Environmental Crisis Prompts New Strategies

New York State’s Data Center Moratorium

In response to severe environmental challenges, including wildfires and flooding, New York enacted a one-year moratorium on permits for new hyperscale data centers that consume more than 50 megawatts (MW) of power. Hyperscale data centers generally require substantial energy and water resources, drawing over 100 MW and using up to 5 million gallons of water daily.

As of 2026, New York houses approximately 50 operating data centers, with an additional three under construction and over 72 projects stalled. This moratorium marks a significant move, as New York becomes the first U.S. state to implement a statewide ban on the construction of large data facilities.

The Role of Satellite-Based Data Centers

Alternatives to traditional data centers are being explored, such as space solarized orbital data centers (ODCs), which utilize solar power and avoid the land and water constraints typically associated with ground facilities. The DeStarlink Genesis 1 satellite, launched in December 2025 by PowerBank, represents a step towards building an orbital cloud network that could significantly reduce terrestrial environmental impacts.

SpaceX’s Elon Musk has advocated for ODCs, stating that energy and water shortages on Earth are major limiting factors for AI compute power. He envisions orbiting data centers harnessing continuous solar energy and benefiting from the natural cooling of space, thereby enabling more sustainable AI computing.

Advancements in Space-Based Solar Power

Major companies are also investing in innovations for energy sourcing. Meta recently reached an agreement to secure up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of space-based solar power for its data centers through cooperation with Overview Energy. This method utilizes satellites in geosynchronous orbit to capture sunlight and transmit it directly to ground facilities, vastly increasing energy efficiency compared to standard solar installations.

Meanwhile, traditional technology giants like Amazon Web Services (AWS) continue to focus on terrestrial expansions, emphasizing sustainable data center practices while exploring AI-focused initiatives.

Looking Ahead: Keeping New York as a Global Financial Hub

Amidst these environmental assessments and innovative strategies for energy sourcing, New York Governor Kathy Hochul is also considering the SUNNY Act, which would allow solar panels for commercial and residential buildings, including data centers. This step could help boost the state’s commitment to sustainability and position New York as a leader in the future of energy and technology.

As this landscape evolves, upcoming events like the National Lighthouse Museum’s Gala on August 7, 2026, and the UN Blockchain Conference in Times Square reflect ongoing dialogues about the intersection of technology, sustainability, and infrastructure.
