Bitcoin Miner Rejects BIP-110 Despite Pool Support
A bitcoin miner operating under the Ocean mining pool has opted not to support the controversial BIP-110 fork, even though the pool had been backing the proposal by default. Simple Mining, which utilizes mining machines through Ocean, utilized software from the pool that allowed individual miners to exercise their own discretion, ultimately deciding against the BIP-110 proposal.
Simple Mining’s Decision
On August 9, 2026, Simple Mining announced that it mined block 961,634 on Bitcoin’s main chain, explicitly not signaling support for BIP-110. This decision was made using Ocean’s DATUM protocol, which grants miners the ability to choose the contents of their blocks rather than adhering strictly to the pool’s decisions.
“Hashrate is a vote you cannot fake, and we decided the proposal wasn’t worth following,”
the company shared on X, highlighting their reasoning.
Context Around BIP-110
BIP-110 aims to prevent the storage of non-financial data in bitcoin transactions for a year. Despite being the default position for Ocean’s mining setup since July, support for BIP-110 never exceeded 2.6%, falling far short of the necessary 55%.
The actions of Simple Mining are particularly significant as Ocean had previously accounted for nearly all of the meager support for BIP-110 prior to the fork. The flexibility provided by Ocean’s DATUM allowed Simple Mining to reject the fork while still benefiting from being part of the mining pool.
The Fork Outcome
Following the decision not to signal for BIP-110, the chain extended with block 961,634. Meanwhile, miners backing BIP-110 faced challenges as their minority branch stalled after producing only two blocks before halting. In contrast, the main Bitcoin chain continued to function normally, consistently generating blocks roughly every ten minutes. As of the latest updates, the main chain had advanced to block 961,725, leaving the BIP-110 branch lagging by over 200 blocks.
