UK FCA Develops Framework for Tokenized Gold with Major Banks

UK FCA Initiates Tokenized Gold Framework Discussions

The U.K. Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is engaging with major banks and market participants to establish standards for tokenized gold, as reported by the Financial Times on August 10, 2026. This initiative is part of an effort to explore the potential use of digital representations of gold as collateral in over-the-counter derivatives markets.

Regulatory Developments on Tokenized Assets

The discussions are centered on creating a regulatory framework that could better integrate tokenized gold into existing wholesale market practices. While a definitive FCA rulebook for tokenized gold has not yet been established, the initiative builds on a joint policy paper released by the FCA and the Bank of England back in May 2026. This document identified tokenized gold as a viable form of collateral in uncleared derivatives transactions.

Current Industry Landscape

Currently, sixteen firms are actively participating in the Digital Securities Sandbox, working on infrastructure for tokenized assets. London holds a significant position in global gold trading, managing approximately 70% of the volume. As competition from Asian financial centers intensifies, the regulatory talks aim to maintain London’s leading role in the international bullion market.

Future of Tokenized Gold Regulation

The FCA’s and Bank of England’s broader consultation regarding tokenization ended on July 3, with plans for industry workshops scheduled for later this summer. According to insider information, an announcement regarding standards for tokenized gold is anticipated in the coming months.

Infrastructure Advancements

Alongside these regulatory frameworks, infrastructure projects are proceeding. The Bank of England is working on updates to its securities and collateral systems, with an eye towards enhancing digital asset integration by 2028. The progress in establishing clear eligibility, legal ownership, custody, and risk frameworks will be fundamental for tokenized gold to become a reliable source of collateral in U.K. wholesale markets.
