Bitcoin’s BIP-110 Faces Stalled Progress as Split Deepens

Bitcoin’s BIP-110 Faces Stalled Progress as Split Deepens

On August 9, 2026, Bitcoin’s BIP-110 proposal encountered significant difficulties, remaining stuck at block 961,633. The enforcing branch of the fork has struggled to produce any new blocks for hours, creating a stark contrast with Bitcoin’s main chain, which has successfully advanced to block 961,744.

Current Status of BIP-110

The BIP-110 branch has not produced a third block since it initiated mandatory signaling on August 8. During this period, the majority of miners have shown minimal support for the proposal, with current data indicating zero signaling from 113 main-chain blocks extracted since the mandatory phase began. The gap between the two chains has now widened to 111 blocks, increasing from 88 earlier in the day.

Mining Activity and Support

According to reports from OCEAN, the BIP-110 endpoint has displayed a hash rate of approximately 257 PH/s but has remained inactive for about 17 hours. Michael Saylor, a prominent figure in the Bitcoin community, estimated that about 99.85% of Bitcoin’s hash power is firmly backing the main chain, effectively leaving the BIP-110 fork outpaced and unsupported.

Mechanics of the Fork

BIP-110 nodes began rejecting non-signaling blocks which led to the creation of two blocks under its governance – 961,632 and 961,633. However, those blocks are insufficient for continued advancement given that the BIP-110 chain is operating under the same difficulty level set at 127.48 trillion as the dominant chain. Bitcoin recalculates its mining difficulty every 2,016 blocks, and with only two blocks mined, the BIP-110 branch faces a lengthy road to achieving a favorable adjustment.

Potential Risks and Future Developments

The stagnation poses practical challenges for users who consider transferring coins from the pre-fork chain because BIP-110 does not offer replay protection. Transactions validated on one branch might inadvertently be executed on the other, creating a risk of unintended financial consequences.

As of the latest reports, there are no indications that significant mining power will redirect to support the BIP-110 fork. The proposal aims to continue mandatory signaling until block 963,647, with a target for eventual activation by block 965,664. Without substantial miner support, the future of BIP-110 remains uncertain.
