Trump Media and Crypto.com Terminate $6.42 Billion CRO Deal
Trump Media and Crypto.com Pull Plug on $6.42 Billion Deal
Trump Media & Technology Group has announced the termination of its $6.42 billion partnership with Crypto.com, less than a year after the deal was first proposed. The companies mutually agreed to end the CRO treasury deal on August 7, 2026, due to prevailing market conditions and shifts in business priorities.
Details of the Termination
The proposed business combination aimed to establish a company focused on managing a substantial Cronos (CRO) treasury. Under the original agreement, Trump Media, Crypto.com, and Yorkville Acquisition Corp. planned to create a funding structure that included $1 billion in CRO, alongside a $5 billion equity line of credit.
Both Trump Media and Crypto.com cited market saturation and changing stakeholder priorities as key reasons for ending the collaboration. However, existing investments and holdings in CRO remain intact, particularly Trump Media’s strategic arrangements that had previously secured substantial amounts of CRO for its balance sheet.
Shifts in Strategic Focus
With the cancellation of the CRO treasury initiative, Trump Media plans to refocus on its merger with TAE Technologies, a transaction valued at over $6 billion, which it hopes to finalize in 2026. This merger appears to take precedence over previous crypto endeavors, reflecting a strategic pivot amid challenging market conditions.
Changes to Prediction Market Plans
Additionally, plans for direct integration of a prediction market product called Truth Predict into Truth Social have been scaled back. Instead of embedding the product, Trump Media will promote Crypto.com’s prediction offerings to users of Truth Social, creating a more manageable operational model while maintaining a partnership.
Future Prospects
The cancellation of the CRO treasury deal does not signify Trump Media’s exit from the cryptocurrency arena entirely, as it continues to hold significant digital asset investments, including 9,542 Bitcoin and approximately 756 million CRO. The planned merger with TAE Technologies stands as a critical upcoming milestone for Trump Media, although it remains contingent on various regulatory and procedural approvals.
In summary, while the $6.42 billion CRO treasury deal has been scrapped, Trump’s relationship with crypto remains active through other avenues, emphasizing an evolved strategy in response to current market dynamics.
