BitMEX Spent Two Years Searching for Buyer Before Decision to Shut Down

BitMEX’s Two-Year Search for a Buyer Ends in Closure

BitMEX, a prominent cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, reportedly spent two years seeking a buyer before ultimately deciding to shut down. The exchange faced numerous challenges, including founder control issues, declining trading activity, and legal complications, which deterred potential acquirers.

Failed Sale Discussions

According to reports, BitMEX engaged in discussions with multiple prospective buyers, ranging from rival exchanges to the wallet company Exodus. Despite exploring these opportunities, no formal agreement was reached. The exchange aimed for a valuation of approximately $1 billion during this negotiation period.

Leadership Challenges

Complicating sales discussions was the ownership structure at BitMEX. While co-founders Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo, and Samuel Reed left management after facing criminal charges in 2020, they retained majority control of the company’s equity. This situation raised concerns for potential buyers, as acquiring firms often require current managers to remain involved post-sale.

Declining Trading Volume

BitMEX’s trading volume has steadily declined, with monthly futures volumes dropping from over $100 billion in early 2021 to between $25 billion and $30 billion by late 2024. This downturn in business significantly reduced the interest of potential buyers, who were reluctant to engage given the diminished valuation prospects.

Legal Issues Impacting Reputation

The exchange’s legal history also posed a significant reputational risk. BitMEX had previously pleaded guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act, which raised concerns regarding its compliance with anti-money laundering regulations. Furthermore, the exchange is currently facing a proposed class action in the U.S. alleging that it profited from forced liquidations of customer positions.

Closure Timeline

Amidst these challenges, BitMEX announced that it would transition to reduce-only trading on August 26, 2026, and officially close its operations on September 23, 2026. Customers have been advised to close open positions and withdraw their assets before the final shutdown, marking the end of an 11-year era for the exchange.
