Polymarket Applies for Margin Trading License for U.S. Customers
Polymarket Files for Margin Trading License
Polymarket, a prediction market platform, has applied for regulatory approval to offer margin trading to its U.S. customers. The application, submitted by Polymarket’s U.S. affiliate Coming Home GBA LLC, is aimed at enabling users to engage in trading without having to fully collateralize their positions.
Regulatory Process and Industry Context
The license application was filed with the National Futures Association and marks a significant step in Polymarket’s strategy to re-enter the U.S. market. To implement margin trading, the company must also gain approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for necessary adjustments to its rulebook. This move comes after competitor Kalshi received authorization to provide similar trading options in March.
Growth of the Prediction Market Sector
As margin trading potentially broadens user engagement, the overall prediction market industry has been experiencing substantial growth. Recent reports indicate that volumes surged to $51 billion last year and are projected to reach approximately $240 billion by 2026. Analysts from Wall Street broker Bernstein foresee an expansion to $1 trillion by 2030, as the markets evolve from niche betting platforms to comprehensive information markets covering various sectors, including sports, cryptocurrency, politics, and economics.
Polymarket’s Return to the U.S. Market
This licensing initiative follows a marketing campaign by Polymarket, aimed at reinforcing its credibility among policymakers and regulators. The company previously ceased operations for U.S. customers in 2022 as part of a settlement with the CFTC, which accused it of offering unregistered derivatives. With this latest application, Polymarket aims to restore its presence in the American market.
