Metaplanet Pursues Bitcoin-Backed Credit Solutions in Japan
Metaplanet, a major player in the bitcoin treasury sector, is actively exploring the introduction of bitcoin-backed digital credit products in Japan. In collaboration with JPYC, a yen stablecoin issuer, and Progmat, a security token platform, the company aims to create efficient, round-the-clock credit markets.
Exploring New Frontiers in Credit Markets
The Tokyo-based firm is particularly interested in utilizing bitcoin as collateral for credit instruments that feature daily interest accrual. Although this type of market currently exists in the United States, Metaplanet believes it is absent in Japan. In a recent statement, the firm highlighted that this digitization could facilitate continuous trading and settlement of credit instruments.
Traditionally, Japan’s credit market favors large corporations, making it difficult for mid-sized and growth companies to participate due to high costs and complex operational requirements. Metaplanet’s initiative seeks to bridge the gap by leveraging blockchain technology to enable smaller companies access to credit while maintaining transparency and efficient management of investor relations.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Possibilities
The collaboration will also involve Siiibo Securities, which Metaplanet recently acquired for 2.1 billion yen (approximately $13 million) and plans to rename Metaplanet Securities on July 13. Together, the collaborating companies will assess key factors such as product design, proof-of-concept initiatives, and potential future issuances. However, as of now, no decisions have been made concerning issuance timing, terms, yields, or product specifics.
Metaplanet currently holds around 43,000 BTC, valued at approximately $2.47 billion, securing its position as the third-largest publicly traded bitcoin holder, behind only MicroStrategy and Twenty One Capital.
Innovations in the Debt Market
The strategic partnership aims to combine each company’s strengths. Metaplanet and its securities division are tasked with designing and creating new products, along with investor communication and ongoing management. Meanwhile, JPYC will focus on integrating its stablecoin for payment and redemption processes, while Progmat will offer a secure framework for transforming these products into digital tokens on the blockchain.
