Sui Plans to Launch Quantum-Safe Account Authentication by 2027

Sui is advancing its blockchain roadmap with a target to roll out quantum-safe account authentication by 2027. The project will incorporate two NIST-approved post-quantum signature schemes designed to offer enhanced security for accounts and smart contracts.

Details of the Upcoming Rollout

As part of its enhancements, Sui aims to implement optional quantum-safe accounts and vaults. Users will be able to retain their existing recovery phrases and wallet addresses as they transition to this new authentication method. The quantum-safe vaults are set to be deployed on the mainnet later this year, while native accounts leveraging post-quantum algorithms are scheduled for testing by the end of 2026.

Enhanced Security Measures

The two signature schemes, ML DSA 65 and SLH DSA, will cater to different security requirements within the network. The ML-DSA-65 scheme will be integrated into everyday user accounts, while the SLH-DSA-SHA2-128s scheme will protect high-value smart contract vaults.

Sui’s decision to adopt these algorithms reflects a growing concern in the blockchain community over the potential threats posed by quantum computing to traditional public-key cryptography. The network warns against “harvest-now-forge-later” attacks, where attackers could collect and archive public keys to exploit them later with future quantum capabilities.

Government Timelines and Research Insights

Research from Google Quantum AI suggests that exposed public keys could be vulnerable to recovery by advanced quantum computers. This research highlighted the urgency for blockchain networks to adapt their security protocols ahead of anticipated quantum advancements, especially in light of new U.S. government mandates to adopt post-quantum cryptographic standards by 2030.

Implementation Considerations

Sui emphasizes the importance of choosing multiple post-quantum algorithms to mitigate risks. Using distinct cryptographic approaches ensures that vulnerabilities discovered in one method do not compromise the security of the other. The project aims to integrate the ML-DSA-65 scheme directly into its protocol while SLH-DSA will be implemented through Move smart contracts, maintaining compatibility with future standards.

Future Outlook and Ongoing Developments

As Sui prepares for its quantum-safe deployment, it assures users that no immediate action will be required from them. Existing recovery phrases will continue to function with the new accounts, and there will be no need for users to switch to new addresses, as features like address aliases are already supported in the network.

Transaction sizes may increase due to the larger signatures used in quantum-safe authentication. However, Sui claims that transaction verification costs will remain comparable to current systems, aiming to accommodate these changes without affecting overall performance.

Industry-Wide Initiatives

Sui’s initiative is part of a broader movement across the blockchain landscape to enhance quantum security. Other projects, like BNB Chain, have also initiated similar upgrades to prepare for potential quantum risks.
