Robinhood Launches $200 Million Venture Fund Targeting Y Combinator Startups

Robinhood’s New Venture Fund Overview

Robinhood has officially filed to raise up to $200 million for its second publicly listed venture fund, Robinhood Ventures Fund II (RVII). This initiative will provide retail investors the opportunity to invest in seed-stage startups, particularly those associated with the well-known Y Combinator accelerator.

Fund Details and Fee Structure

The RVII fund is set to introduce a new fee structure, including a 2% management fee and a 20% performance fee on realized gains, which were not featured in Robinhood’s first fund. It plans to offer about 7.6 million shares priced at $25 each, with another 400,000 shares to be sold by Robinhood separately. Trading on the New York Stock Exchange is anticipated to begin on August 13, pending regulatory approval.

Shift in Investment Focus

This new venture marks a shift from its previous fund, which concentrated on later-stage companies like Databricks, Stripe, and SpaceX. In contrast, RVII will focus on much earlier stage investments, targeting approximately 80 private companies, primarily driven by connections to Y Combinator.

Investment Philosophy

According to Sarah Pinto, head of Robinhood Ventures, the new fund aims to enable retail investors to engage in the growth of companies before their eventual public offers, providing a unique opportunity in the startup ecosystem.

Regulatory Filings and Partnerships

Regulatory documentation indicates that while Robinhood may reference Y Combinator, the accelerator does not endorse or accept responsibility for the fund. Y Combinator has a successful track record, having funded over 5,000 startups since its inception in 2005, with valuations exceeding $1.3 trillion.

Expanding Investment Horizons

This fundraising effort aligns with Robinhood’s broader ambition to diversify its business, moving beyond traditional brokerage services and cryptocurrency trading. Prior to this, Robinhood also secured registration with the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority, paving the way for its UK operations to offer cryptocurrency services under strict regulatory guidelines.
