Open USD’s Launch Impacts Circle’s Valuation but USDC Receives Ongoing Support

Open USD’s Launch Shakes Circle’s Market Value

The introduction of Open USD, a new stablecoin backed by Coinbase, Visa, and Mastercard, led to significant market fluctuations for Circle’s USDC stablecoin. Investors reacted swiftly to the announcement, fearing a direct competition that would undermine USDC’s dominance, resulting in a 20% drop in Circle’s shares and billions erased from its market value.

Insights from Key Industry Players

In response to the rising concerns, executives from the major backers of Open USD have emphasized a multi-stablecoin strategy. During recent earnings calls, leaders from Coinbase, Visa, and Mastercard reiterated their commitment to supporting various stablecoins rather than favoring one directly over another.

Coinbase’s Continued Commitment to USDC

Coinbase Chief Financial Officer Alesia Haas confirmed that the exchange remains aligned with Circle, having met the conditions necessary to renew its commercial agreement with the company. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong highlighted that the exchange operates as a multi-stablecoin platform, affirming plans to continue supporting USDC alongside other stablecoins such as Tether’s USDT and PayPal’s PYUSD. He noted that Open USD could open up “additional business and revenue opportunities.”

Visa and Mastercard’s Neutral Stance

Visa CEO Ryan McInerney characterized the company’s approach as “multi-coin, multi-chain,” stating that Visa’s role is to provide pathways for clients to connect with whichever stablecoin ultimately gains traction. Recently, Visa launched its Stablecoin Platform using Open USD as the initial supported token.

Mastercard’s CEO Michael Miebach echoed a similar message, referring to Open USD as an addition to their existing network of supported stablecoins, which includes USDC and USDG. He emphasized the importance of choice among stablecoins and clarified that the governance of Open USD would not involve the entire partner network.

Market Perspectives and Potential Implications

The responses from industry leaders have led some analysts to reassess the potential impact of Open USD. According to ARK Invest’s Lorenzo Valente, the initial enthusiasm surrounding Open USD’s partner list might have overstated the level of commitment from these firms. He described their involvement as more of a “soft letter of intent” than a definitive strategic move, suggesting that these companies are maintaining flexibility while monitoring Open USD’s progress.

Despite the initial market reaction, Clear Street’s Owen Lau remarked that the strong liquidity and established network effects of USDC and Tether’s USDT pose significant challenges for new entrants trying to capture market share.

The Future Landscape of Stablecoins

As the stablecoin market evolves, the participation of major firms like Visa, Mastercard, and Coinbase could enhance the usage of stablecoins in consumer payments, irrespective of which specific token prevails. Nevertheless, the complexities of aligning interests among numerous partners in this space remain a formidable challenge.
