Polymarket Eyes $20 Billion Valuation as Competition Intensifies
Polymarket Targets $20 Billion Valuation
Polymarket, a blockchain-based prediction markets platform, is reportedly pursuing another funding round aimed at achieving a valuation of $20 billion. This endeavor follows a significant funding round that valued the company at $15 billion just a few months ago, which involved a substantial investment of $600 million from the Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange.
Recent Financial Performance
Despite experiencing a decline in trading volumes during April and May, Polymarket reported to CNBC in June that its annualized revenue had surpassed $1 billion. The increases in revenue have been attributed to record trading activity during high-profile events like the World Cup, illustrating the platform’s resilience in a competitive market.
Shayne Coplan’s Vision
Shayne Coplan, the founder and CEO of Polymarket, emphasizes that the platform should be understood as an information resource rather than a mere betting site. He describes prediction markets as a way for individuals to express dissenting opinions against consensus views, referring to the platform as “a very useful thermometer of the world” that can assist users in evaluating the likelihood of future occurrences. His long-term objective is to expand Polymarket beyond headline events into a more comprehensive “almanac for the future,” covering a wide variety of markets.
Intensifying Competition
The landscape for prediction markets is becoming increasingly competitive in the United States. Many cryptocurrency-focused companies, including Coinbase and Robinhood, are integrating prediction market features into their platforms. Among its competitors, Kalshi leads the charge, reportedly seeking funding at an impressive $40 billion valuation, nearly double what it raised in previous funding rounds. Kalshi operates as a federally regulated exchange in the U.S., contrasting with Polymarket’s blockchain infrastructure and cryptocurrency settlement, which appeals to different trader demographics.
