BlackRock Launches On-Chain Money Market Funds in Europe

BlackRock Expands On-Chain Fund Access in Europe

On August 4, 2026, BlackRock announced the launch of tokenized share classes for institutional money market funds in Europe, covering a substantial $311 billion in assets. This initiative enhances the accessibility and efficiency of liquidity assets for institutional investors by utilizing blockchain technology.

Tokenized Share Classes on Ethereum

The new system, based on Ethereum, allows approved investors to transfer fund shares directly between eligible wallets while maintaining traditional fund records. This rollout includes select BlackRock Institutional Cash Series (ICS) money market funds.

Partnership with JPMorgan

BlackRock’s tokenization effort was developed in partnership with Kinexys by JPMorgan, reflecting a strategic integration of blockchain with existing financial frameworks. The initiative encompasses 12 tokenized share classes across various fund categories including ICS Euro Government Liquidity and U.S. Dollar Liquidity.

Use Cases and Market Reach

The tokenized share classes are set to serve a range of institutional use cases from treasury management to digital collateral management, and the rollout is expected to be accessible across 15 European and international markets, including countries like Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.

Enhancing Investment Structure

BlackRock’s approach combines return-bearing money market fund exposure with real-time visibility on the blockchain. According to Hannah Winter, Head of Digital Cash at BlackRock, these tokenized funds will provide a digital form of high-quality, short-duration investment without compromising on capital preservation and risk management practices.

Continued Growth in Digital Asset Infrastructure

The European launch follows BlackRock’s introduction of two other tokenized money market products in the U.S., highlighting the firm’s commitment to enhancing its digital asset infrastructure. This includes participation in a pilot program with the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) aimed at testing tokenized representations of financial assets, while maintaining their underlying infrastructure.

As BlackRock continues to build out its offerings in the tokenized space, it aims to bridge traditional finance with digital assets, allowing institutional investors to capitalize on the benefits of blockchain technology in managing liquidity and investment strategies.
