Bitcoin Holds Steady at $63,600 Amidst Yen Intervention

As of Monday, Bitcoin is trading at $63,600, showing minimal movement over the past 24 hours. This stability comes in the wake of a rare coordinated intervention by the United States and Japan to support the yen, a move that has renewed concerns about the impact on global markets and the carry trade.

US and Japan’s Coordinated Action

The U.S. and Japanese governments confirmed their joint action to buy yen after the currency weakened to 163.73 per dollar. Reports indicate that Japan may have spent as much as $36.6 billion as part of this intervention; however, details on the U.S. contribution have not been disclosed.

Impact on the Carry Trade

The intervention has significant implications for the carry trade, in which investors borrow from Japan – where interest rates are as low as 1% – to invest in higher-yielding assets. A sudden appreciation of the yen can lead to forced position closures, impacting various asset classes, including cryptocurrencies. Despite these underlying risks, Bitcoin’s price remained stable, increasing by approximately 1.8% over the last day and showing little change over the past week.

Market Insights from Bitget Wallet

Alvin Kan, chief operating officer at Bitget Wallet, commented on the situation, suggesting that the intervention should be seen as a measure to prevent chaotic trading rather than an indication of a long-term recovery for the yen. He noted that the interest rate disparity still favors the dollar, with the Federal Reserve’s benchmark rates at 3.50% to 3.75% compared to Japan’s 1%. Without a reduction in this gap, repeated interventions may only provide short-term stabilization for the yen.
