Boltz Suspends Bitcoin Swaps Indefinitely Amid AI-Driven Attacks
Boltz has announced the indefinite suspension of its Bitcoin swap services as of August 3, 2026, after months of facing automated, AI-assisted probing and several contained exploits. The decision follows a significant increase in the speed and sophistication of attacks that outpace the company’s capability to identify and address vulnerabilities.
Operational Disruptions and User Protection
While Boltz has temporarily halted its swap services, the company stated that no user funds were compromised during the incidents thanks to its noncustodial architecture. Users maintain control of their assets throughout the atomic swap process. Boltz reported that it absorbed all operational losses related to the exploits.
Impact on Associated Services
The suspension has impacted various wallets reliant on Boltz, including Bull Bitcoin, Aqua, and ZEUS, which reported disruptions to their services. Bull Bitcoin, for example, noted that the shutdown disrupted Lightning payments and conversions between Liquid Bitcoin and on-chain Bitcoin. However, standard transactions and other wallet functionalities continued to operate normally.
Root Causes and Future Plans
The company identified the attackers as “multiple resourceful groups,” but did not provide specific names or independent verification regarding the nature of the threats. Boltz also indicated that the attacks had intensified in recent days, preventing the development team from implementing timely fixes.
Prior to the complete halt of swap services, Boltz had already disabled transactions involving several assets due to a bug related to its Ethereum Virtual Machine integration. Following this issue, the protocol decided to cease all swap activities.
In light of the ongoing threats, Boltz has not provided a timeline for when the swap services might resume. It has committed to keeping its API online for cooperative refunds, ensuring that users can still process unilateral refunds without reliance on its infrastructure. The support team remains available to assist customers with pending transactions.
Evaluating Future Security Measures
As Boltz navigates this situation, the company plans to assess options that may include automated monitoring, outside audits, or modifications to its open-source infrastructure.
With the continuing evolution of threats, Boltz’s management highlighted the need for vigilance and adaptability within the current technological landscape, particularly concerning the role of AI in both attacks and defenses.
