Coinbase’s Legal Chief Paul Grewal to Depart Amid Leadership Changes

Leadership Transition at Coinbase

Coinbase’s Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal is set to leave the cryptocurrency exchange following an extensive legal battle with U.S. regulators, though he will continue as an adviser. The announcement was made on July 9, 2026, amidst further changes in the company’s senior leadership team.

Grewal’s Contributions and Future Plans

Grewal has served as Coinbase’s legal chief through significant challenges, most notably the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) lawsuit that alleged the company was operating as an unregistered broker, clearinghouse, and exchange for securities. He hailed leading the legal team through these unprecedented times as the highlight of his six-year tenure. “Our legal wins helped ensure crypto not only had a future in this country, but could flourish,” Grewal stated.

As part of his next steps, Grewal will transition to a startup but will remain involved with Coinbase, specifically working on initiatives related to the trust charter through the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

New Leadership Appointments

Following Grewal’s departure, Molly Abraham has been appointed as general counsel. She has been part of Coinbase since March 2021 and previously led multiple legal teams as the company’s vice president of legal. Abraham has experience from her past role as general counsel at an electric flying car startup.

Additionally, Ryan Van Grack, formerly the general counsel at Citadel Securities, has been named vice chairman, where he is expected to take on a more prominent, public-facing role within the company.

Context of SEC Legal Battles

The recent leadership changes come on the heels of a prolonged legal battle against the SEC, which had initially filed suit against Coinbase in 2023. After extensive litigation, the SEC dropped the case following changes in the political landscape. Coinbase also sought to access internal SEC documents concerning cryptocurrency regulation, marking a significant chapter in its legal history.
