Temasek Shifts Focus from Crypto to AI Amid Regulatory Challenges

Temasek Shifts Focus from Crypto to AI Amid Regulatory Challenges

Singapore’s state-owned investment firm, Temasek Holdings, has announced a significant strategic pivot, stating it will not engage in cryptocurrency investments. The decision comes in light of ongoing regulatory uncertainties and the firm’s experience with a $275 million loss linked to the collapse of the crypto exchange FTX in 2022.

AI Investments to Increase Significantly

Temasek’s portfolio, valued at approximately 518 billion Singapore dollars (around $400 billion), will increase its exposure to artificial intelligence (AI) from 6% to 15% by 2031. Nagi Hamiyeh, the president of Temasek Global Investments, emphasized that this period marks the beginning of a long-term investment cycle in AI, which he anticipates will span decades. However, he also noted that current valuations in certain segments of the AI market may have outpaced their fundamentals.

Background and Regulatory Environment

The firm is still reeling from the repercussions of the FTX failure which underlined vulnerabilities in consumer protections within Singapore’s crypto landscape. This prompted the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to adopt stricter regulatory measures, leading to increased compliance costs and slower approval processes for new investments.

Exploring Blockchain Without Crypto Commitment

Despite withdrawing from crypto, Temasek continues to investigate blockchain technology for its potential economic applications. Hamiyeh reiterated that the firm is dedicated to AI advancements and building a robust commercial AI ecosystem. He remarked, “It’s all about the applications, and it’s all about the companies that embrace AI and build a moat.”
