Ethereum’s Shifting Position in the Crypto Landscape
As the demand for crypto perpetual futures, commonly known as “perps,” skyrockets, Ethereum’s traditional role as the foundation of decentralized finance is undergoing significant changes. Instead of directly competing with faster blockchain networks, some industry builders assert that Ethereum’s true strength lies in its support for layer-2 networks where much of today’s trading occurs.
Perpetuals Thrive Outside of Ethereum
Historically, Ethereum has been the cornerstone of decentralized finance (DeFi), hosting essential tools such as lending protocols and tokenized assets. However, as the perpetual futures market has evolved, a growing number of traders are gravitating towards platforms like Hyperliquid and Solana, leaving Ethereum behind regarding on-chain perpetual trading. The reason lies in the unique requirements of perpetual trading – high-frequency execution, low fees, and deep liquidity – that Ethereum’s base layer does not optimize for.
Challenges of Ethereum’s Base Layer
AJ Warner, chief strategy officer at Offchain Labs, emphasizes that perpetual trading requires fast transaction speeds and a high success rate. “Perps require frequent transactions, fast execution, and deep liquidity,” he stated, highlighting why platforms such as Arbitrum have become the strategic choice for many perpetual traders. The shift to decentralized perps platforms initiated by Arbitrum’s launch has brought significant attention, as its infrastructure supports the rapid execution needed for such trading strategies.
Layer-2 Solutions: The Compromise for Performance
Today, the majority of Ethereum-based perpetual trading occurs on layer-2 networks, including Arbitrum and Base. This transition reflects a compromise: these layer-2 solutions maintain Ethereum’s security while enhancing trading performance. Both networks have significantly reduced block times and attracted users and liquidity, enabling them to flourish as trading destinations. Chris Boulous of Dromos Labs notes the importance of existing liquidity, stating, “Trading is effectively a network-effects business. You have to build where the liquidity and users currently exist.”
The Rise of Competitors
Ethereum’s layer-2 ecosystems face competition beyond their borders. Hyperliquid has emerged with an application-specific chain optimized for perpetual trading, while Solana, known for its low fees, has developed a robust retail trading community. Brian Smith of the Jito Foundation cites the significance of retail flow as a critical aspect of any exchange platform: “Solana is the king of retail trading activity.” Furthermore, he points out that Ethereum also suffers from liquidity fragmentation, necessitating users to bridge assets between networks, resulting in a less streamlined experience compared to single-chain ecosystems.
A Long-Term Perspective on Ethereum’s Role
Despite the mounting challenges, some Ethereum advocates believe the narrative of competition misses a broader perspective. Matthieu Saint Olive, a MetaMask product manager, argues that purpose-built chains may excel in execution speed, yet they depend on Ethereum’s robust network for collateral and settlement. “Ethereum’s role is the settlement and collateral base where the deepest liquidity and the widest range of assets exist,” he explained.
Looking Ahead: Institutional Interest and the Future of Perpetuals
As institutional interest in on-chain derivatives grows, the focus is shifting from mere functionality to competition with traditional financial infrastructure. Institutions require deeper liquidity, efficient capital utilization, and improved execution to engage fully in on-chain trading. Warner describes the critical milestone for future success: platforms must offer capabilities that are impossible or more costly to achieve in traditional markets.
Ethereum’s Path Forward
While high-speed trading continues to gravitate towards Solana and other purpose-built chains, Ethereum is positioning itself as the foundation for settlement and collateralization of these high-frequency trades through its layer-2 networks. The ability to resolve challenges such as liquidity fragmentation, interoperability, and user experience will determine whether Ethereum maintains its critical role or becomes overshadowed. Proponents remain optimistic, asserting that Ethereum does not need to be the fastest trading option; it simply needs to be the most reliable settlement layer.
