Zcash Introduces $1.7 Billion Shielded Pool with Ironwood Upgrade

Zcash Introduces $1.7 Billion Shielded Pool with Ironwood Upgrade

Zcash has rolled out its Ironwood upgrade, officially known as NU6.3, effectively sealing the Orchard shielded pool, which comprised approximately 3.66 million ZEC valued at roughly $1.7 billion. This upgrade was activated at block 3,428,143, transitioning the network to a new private pool that begins with no coins.

Security Enhancements Following Orchard’s Counterfeit Bug

The Ironwood upgrade marks the retirement of the Orchard pool, which has been under scrutiny due to revealing a counterfeiting bug that persisted for four years. The Orchard pool previously enabled any coin to exit without verification, leading to potential risks within the system. Under the new structure, every coin now has to exit through a designated turnstile gate, limiting total withdrawals to the amount that can be verified as deposited.

Addressing Previous Vulnerabilities

Researcher Taylor Hornby from Shielded Labs identified the bug in Orchard’s proof circuit on May 29. It allowed the potential to mint counterfeit ZEC, but a CoinDesk report indicated there was no evidence of exploitation. The balance of Orchard grew consistently even during profitable market conditions, suggesting that no minted coins were moved out for sale.

To mitigate previous vulnerabilities, Ironwood incorporates new security measures, including provisions to protect against future threats from quantum computing, as specified under ZIP 2005. Additionally, the proof circuit for validating transactions is undergoing formal verification, ensuring it functions correctly across all scenarios.

Migration to the New Pool

As of the latest updates, around 1,500 ZEC have already transitioned to the newly created pool. Tracking migration patterns will be crucial as users voluntarily move assets from Orchard to the Ironwood pool. Currently, the bulk of Zcash’s private supply remains in a pool that does not allow for additional deposits, awaiting user action to relocate their coins.

At the time of the upgrade, ZEC traded near $463, reflecting an 8% decline for the day and a 15% drop over the week; however, it still remains significantly higher than its value from a year ago.
