Tether Gold Secures Shariah Certification for XAU₮
Tether Gold has announced that it has obtained Shariah certification for its gold-backed token XAU₮, marking a significant step forward in expanding its accessibility among Islamic banks, institutions, and individual investors.
Certification Details
Amanah Advisors, a global Islamic finance advisory firm, conducted a review to certify XAU₮, ensuring its compliance with Islamic finance principles. The evaluation focused on various aspects, including ownership structure, reserve transparency, and the token’s backing by physical gold.
Each XAU₮ token represents one troy fine ounce of gold, which is securely stored in Swiss vaults. The certification confirms that the token adheres to key Islamic finance principles, such as the clear ownership of tangible assets and the prohibition of riba, or interest, within its structure.
Potential Market Impact
This certification opens the door for XAU₮ to be utilized in a broader range of Islamic financial products, such as halal savings accounts, institutional gold allocations, and Islamic insurance (takaful). Shariah-compliant frameworks commonly emphasize identifiable asset transactions while avoiding interest and speculative practices.
Tether’s CEO, Paolo Ardoino, remarked that the certification bridges the established demand for gold with the emerging blockchain financial infrastructure, enhancing access to digital gold that aligns with Islamic financial principles. This could particularly benefit regions with significant Muslim populations, including the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, South Asia, and Africa.
Recognition in Abu Dhabi
In addition to this Shariah certification, XAU₮ has gained recognition as an Accepted Spot Commodity in Abu Dhabi, allowing firms operating within this financial center to support it under the necessary regulatory frameworks. This acknowledgment further solidifies Tether Gold’s market position in the region.
Implications for U.S. Investors
For U.S. investors, the Shariah certification does not alter the legal or regulatory standing of XAU₮. Instead, it serves as a validation from Amanah Advisors of the token’s alignment with Islamic finance principles. Investors are encouraged to conduct their own reviews regarding custody, liquidity, and other pertinent factors.
Tether is also expanding the role of XAU₮ beyond trading and custody by partnering with Bitcoin lending company Ledn, which will allow eligible users to utilize the token as collateral for loans while maintaining its gold-backed integrity.
Looking Ahead
The combination of Shariah certification and the Abu Dhabi designation is likely to foster increased institutional adoption of XAU₮, though access will continue to be influenced by local regulations affecting participating financial firms.
