Zcash to Activate Ironwood Upgrade on July 28 Following Orchard Bug

Zcash to Activate Ironwood Upgrade on July 28 Following Orchard Bug

Zcash announced it will activate the NU6.3 “Ironwood” network upgrade at block height 3,428,143 on July 28, 2026. This upgrade aims to replace the Orchard transaction pool with a new system designed to enhance privacy and prevent potential exploitation.

Key Features of the Ironwood Upgrade

The Ironwood upgrade will implement a new shielded transaction pool system, effectively eliminating vulnerabilities linked to the old Orchard pool. Following the activation, the new system will introduce a turnstile mechanism that limits the amount of ZEC leaving Orchard to match the amount entering it, thereby improving the verification of public supply.

According to the Zcash Foundation’s Zebra 6.0.0 release notes, the planned activation time is approximately 13:00 UTC. Node operators are urged to upgrade their systems before this crucial fork to maintain network integrity.

Addressing the Orchard Flaw

This upgrade comes on the heels of a recently disclosed flaw in the Orchard pool, which could have enabled attackers to create counterfeit ZEC. Although developers have reported no evidence of exploitation, the lack of transparency in the privacy-focused design of Zcash complicates verifying whether hidden inflation occurred.

New Technical Enhancements

The Ironwood upgrade does not currently make Zcash quantum secure, but it includes features like quantum recoverable notes. This upcoming feature is designed to enhance the recovery of notes through a post-quantum protocol, binding additional note data to allow for ownership verification without relying solely on traditional cryptography.

To utilize the new quantum recovery feature, users must migrate their funds into Ironwood notes, as existing balances in older pools like Sprout and Sapling will not be eligible for this protection.

Transitioning from zcashd to Zebra Node Software

Ironwood will mark Zcash’s full transition away from the older zcashd node software, which will cease support at block 3,417,100. This shift ensures that all node operators are aligned with the new upgrade requirements.

In addition, the Ironwood upgrade addresses potential security concerns by preventing the transmission of non-standard transactions that could strain node resources.

Conclusion

The pending Ironwood upgrade is a significant step for Zcash as it confronts vulnerabilities and enhances transaction security. With activation set for July 28, users and node operators are advised to prepare for the transition to ensure a smooth migration to the new system.
