Storj Labs Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Amid Restructuring Efforts

Storj Labs Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Storj Labs has officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a move aimed at restructuring its legacy debts while continuing to operate its decentralized cloud storage services. The filing took place on July 26 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of West Virginia.

Background of the Filing

Despite raising approximately $35 million through various funding sources including venture capital, grants, and the initial coin offering of its STORJ token in 2017, the company found itself needing to address older financial obligations. In its restructuring announcement, Storj emphasized that the filing was intended to facilitate a reorganization rather than signal an end to its operations.

Company Operations During the Bankruptcy Process

According to Storj, normal business operations, including customer services and network functionality, will continue as usual, subject to bankruptcy court rules. The company reassured clients that it does not anticipate any interruptions to its services. However, any significant business decisions may require court approval during the proceedings.

Focus on Core Business

As part of its restructuring efforts, Storj plans to narrow its focus to its core cloud storage business and is disposing of non-essential operations and earlier acquisitions. Kaloyan Raev, the company’s director of software engineering, noted that while the business is “strong and right-sized,” it is hindered by debts from an earlier stage.

Ownership Proposal for Stakeholders

The company has proposed a shared ownership plan that could involve management, community members, STORJ token holders, and current investors. However, the specifics on how ownership would be allocated or if token holders would qualify remains unclear and would need to be included in a formal Chapter 11 plan, gaining creditor support and court approval.

Future Developments

Before this filing, Storj had already made changes to its cloud storage pricing structure effective July 1, 2026. Moving forward, it is expected that more detailed information regarding its debts, assets, and the role of token holders will emerge as the bankruptcy case unfolds.
