KB Kookmin Bank to Launch Cross-Border Payment Service Using Kinexys
KB Kookmin Bank Sets Launch for Blockchain-Based Payment Service
KB Kookmin Bank, South Korea’s largest lender, is set to launch a blockchain-enabled cross-border payment service in August 2026. This new initiative aims to facilitate U.S. dollar payments for import and export firms across ten different countries.
Service Details and Scope
The service will be based on the Kinexys platform developed by J.P. Morgan, integrating blockchain settlement with traditional SWIFT systems. It will support corporate transfers beyond conventional banking hours, thereby enhancing operational efficiency for businesses involved in international trade.
The primary focus during the initial launch will be on U.S. dollar transactions. The service will encompass markets including South Korea, the United States, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, India, Thailand, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and South Africa. KB Kookmin will make the service available through its domestic branches as well as its Singapore branch.
Key Features of the Payment Service
Announced on July 26, 2026, the cross-border payment service will utilize near-real-time technology, allowing for instantaneous foreign exchange settlements at any time of day. J.P. Morgan’s Kinexys platform enables authorized institutions to transfer funds without the limitations of conventional banking hours.
While the new service will not replace SWIFT, it will enhance existing systems by connecting Kinexys with traditional payment rails. This structure allows for faster transactions while maintaining necessary compliance and account structures.
Background and Future Prospects
KB Kookmin’s introduction of Kinexys follows several significant blockchain initiatives within KB Financial Group, including a recent $100 million digital bond sale. Moreover, the bank participates in a government-associated project aimed at linking tokenized deposits with public spending systems and is developing a payment system that integrates stablecoins with traditional credit cards.
The upcoming launch underscores KB Kookmin Bank’s commitment to advancing its blockchain capabilities and enhancing service offerings to corporate clients, promoting quicker and more efficient payment solutions in the global marketplace.
